Report from Hogback Church of Christ, Navajo Nation

My friend and brother, Phillip James, has labored long for the Lord among his own Navajo people for over 20 years. He preaches and ministers for the Hogback Church of Christ in Waterflow, New Mexico. He writes a monthly report on his work. I have attached his latest bulletin. Please read about the good things happening for the Kingdom at Hogback, and remember Phil & Irita James and their congregation in your prayers.

The Hogback church is one of 9 congregations located on the lands of the Navajo Nation. They are all in need of your prayers and financial support. Can you help them? If so, I can get you contact information.

Report from Phillip James:

Hogback Report - October 2011

Dear Brethren,

We took sweet counsel together, And walked to the house of God in the throng. (Ps 55:14)

How is everyone doing at your congregations? I hope and pray that the congregations are doing well. As Christians we love to be together, that’s what characterizes our journey on this earth. The more we get together, the happier we are. Brethren, being with your brothers and sisters in Christ is great source of joy and comfort. Especially, on the first day of the week, when all Christians come and worship the living God. We put our hearts into worshipping God. What a family we have. We are blessed that we are united in Christ Jesus.

First, I am going to open with the classes that we have on the Navajo Nation Churches of Christ. As you might all know by now, that the Bear Valley School of Preaching, staff and teachers are willing to come out and teach what they teach at Bear Valley. These classes are going great. The average attendance is twenty to thirty students. This month we’re supposed to have the class at Kinlichee, Az, but because of the worship building destroyed by fire or completely burned down. We had to change the location. The classes was held at Crownpoint, N.M. Even Satan tried to stop our get together we still had classes. Our Lord is powerful. Brother Wayne Burger came and taught Hebrews chapters six and seven. It was an excellent class. Wayne is a good teacher, his teachings are clear and simple to understand. In November he will be back. The classes will be at Manyfarms, Az where Ben Begay preaches. Brethren we are far apart from each other, but these believers are willing to drive the distance and participate. Being together is what makes us strong and together we learn God’s word. Keep Kinlichee congregation in your prayers that they will rebuild and come to a place to worship again.

One of the members here in Hogback got sick. His name is Olsen Thompson. Olsen was baptized in July. He is a new babe in Christ. He went through a lot. He could not stand on his own or walk on his own. He went to San Juan hospital in Farmington N.M., Shiprock Hospital and St Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix, Az. They tell him there is nothing wrong with him. He even lost his eyesight. Talking with him recently he told me that he is getting his strength back and his sight coming back slowly. This is the family who comes to worship from Arizona. They drive about one hour one way to Hogback every Lord’s Day. We believed he is getting better. Praise God for being there for him and answering our prayers. Please keep Olsen and his family in your prayers.

We were invited to our friend Aaron Appleby’s wedding in Abilene, Texas. The wedding was outside and it was a good one. The weather was good on that day for a wedding. We met Aaron this summer. He came with Oldham Lane Church of Christ from Abilene. Oldham Lane did a V.B.S. Bradley Crider and Chris Atkins brought with them about twenty teenagers and seven adults. While we were in Abilene, the family from Oldham Lane were very friendly and received us with open arms. They put us in a nice hotel for four days. Aaron wanted us to fly out there. But I told him we would rather ride a horse. Some of the families took us out to eat, others invited us to their homes. One of the members there bought a communion tray for the church here. We had a lot of fun and were encouraged by the whole congregation. Everyone lifted up our spirit. We worshipped with them and in the evening we were invited by Bradley and the youths to play games and had dinner with them. We sure enjoyed our trip. We are so blessed by Oldham Lane family. Aaron and Whitney, thank you for inviting us to your wedding. We love the Oldham Lane family and we hope they will continue to come to Hogback. While I was gone Tim Driver from Eastside Church of Christ in Farmington, N.M. came out to teach and preach for me. He always does an awesome job. He is always willing to help me when I’m not here.

In closing thank you to all who bless this work with their support, prayers and most of all, love. We love all God’s family on this earth. Thank you to all who sent us e-mails,cards,and sometimes gifts. May God almighty bless your congregations. God bless you all in a powerful way.
